Syslinux

Linux bootloader or a family of bootloaders.

Syslinux is

1. bootloader used with FAT partitions
2. an umbrella term for a family of bootloaders
   • SYSLINUX - FAT partitions
   • PXELINUX - network storage boot
   • ISOLINUX - CD-ROM bootloader
   • EXTLINUX - ext2/3/4 bootloader
   • MEMDISK - legacy OS bootloader (read floppy-era legacy)

SYSLINUX bootloader

SYSLINUX is a boot loader for the Linux operating system which runs on an MS-DOS/Windows FAT filesystem. It is intended to simplify first-time installation of Linux, and for creation of rescue and other special purpose boot disks.

When properly configured, SYSLINUX can be used to completely eliminate the need for distribution of raw boot floppy images. A SYSLINUX floppy can be manipulated using standard MS-DOS (or any OS capable of accessing an MS-DOS filesystem) tools once it has been created.

EXTLINUX bootloader

EXTLINUX is a Syslinux variant which boots from a Linux filesystem.

EXTLINUX supports:

• [4.06+] FAT12/16/32, NTFS, ext2/3/4, Btrfs,
• [5.01+] FAT12/16/32, NTFS, ext2/3/4, Btrfs, XFS,
• [6.03+] FAT12/16/32, NTFS, ext2/3/4, Btrfs, XFS, UFS/FFS,

It works the same way as SYSLINUX, with a few slight modifications.
